It took just two years, two months and five days to raise the tallest structure on earth. What began as the bold gamble of one engineer became the beating heart of Paris, and your host brings that whole story to life on the way up.
On the Champ-de-Mars, four giant pillars begin to rise. Gustave Eiffel promises a 300-metre tower for the Universal Exposition, a challenge many called impossible.
After 2 years and 18,000 iron pieces held by 2.5 million rivets, the tower opens to the world. Two million visitors climb it during the Exposition alone.
